Academic or vocational university – what is the difference?

Every Polish higher education institution is listed in the register as either academic or vocational. This is not a measure of prestige but a statutory division that determines which degree programmes the institution may run and whether it may confer academic degrees.

What the law says

The Law on Higher Education and Science (Prawo o szkolnictwie wyższym i nauce) divides higher education institutions into academic and vocational ones. An academic institution must hold a scientific category of A+, A or B+ in at least one discipline. Categories are awarded in the evaluation of the quality of research activity, separately for each discipline.

A vocational institution (uczelnia zawodowa) does not need such a category. It runs practice-oriented programmes, i.e. programmes in which more than half of the ECTS credits are assigned to classes developing practical skills.

How many institutions of each type

According to the POL-on register (as of 6 November 2026), there are 344 operating higher education institutions. 137 of them are academic and 207 vocational. Among public institutions, 104 are academic and 32 vocational.

The division does not follow the name. Some academies (akademia) are academic institutions and others vocational; the type is decided not by a word in the name but by the evaluation results.

What this means for applicants

A diploma confers the same professional title regardless of the type of institution. The differences concern the profile of the programme and the further path: academic degrees are conferred only by entities authorised to do so in a given discipline, and such authorisation depends on the scientific category.

The type of each institution is shown on its page in the Universities directory, and the list can be filtered by type and voivodeship. Terms are explained in the Glossary of Polish science.
